Understanding PrEP and PEP: HIV Prevention You Should Know

HIV prevention has come a long way, and today, two highly effective tools-PrEP and PEP-are helping people stay safe and in control of their sexual health. Whether you’re part of a key population, in a high-risk situation, or just want to stay informed, knowing about PrEP and PEP could be life-changing.

🔹 What is PrEP?

PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a daily pill taken by HIV-negative individuals to prevent HIV infection before potential exposure. It works by building up protective levels of HIV-fighting medication in the body, making it very difficult for the virus to take hold if exposure occurs.

✅ Who should consider PrEP?

  • People with an HIV-positive partner
  • Anyone with multiple sexual partners
  • Individuals who don’t consistently use condoms
  • People who inject drugs and share needles
  • Members of key populations like MSM (men who have sex with men), sex workers, and transgender persons

✅ How effective is PrEP?

When taken daily, PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99%, and from injection drug use by at least 74%.

✅ Is PrEP safe?

Yes. PrEP is generally safe with few side effects, which may include mild nausea or headaches that usually go away within a few days.

🔹 What is PEP?

PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) is an emergency HIV prevention treatment. It involves taking antiretroviral medicines after a potential exposure to HIV-ideally within 72 hours.

✅ When should you use PEP?

  • After unprotected sex with someone who may be HIV-positive
  • Following a condom break during sex
  • After sexual assault
  • If you shared needles or had a workplace needle-stick injury

✅ How is PEP taken?

PEP involves a 28-day course of HIV treatment medications, taken once or twice daily. It must be started within 72 hours of exposure-the sooner, the better.

✅ How effective is PEP?

If started promptly and taken correctly, PEP is highly effective in preventing HIV infection. However, it is not 100% guaranteed and is not meant for regular use like PrEP.
