Community Engagement and Capacity Building

Advancing Inclusive HIV and SRHR Services in Kenya

MAAYGO recently joined NASCOP leadership and Key Population leaders in a high-level dialogue on strengthening HIV and SRHR programming in Kenya. The engagement provided a critical platform to address the unique health needs of Key Populations while shaping inclusive and community-driven health systems.

Advancing HIV and SRHR Programming in Kenya

The dialogue focused on improving access to HIV and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) services for Gender and Sexual Diverse Minority (GSDM) communities. These communities continue to face barriers such as stigma, discrimination, and limited access to healthcare. Strengthening programming ensures that no one is left behind in the national HIV response.

Key Outcomes from the Dialogue

Several important themes emerged from the discussions, including:

  • Expanding Access to Services: Enhancing HIV prevention, testing, and treatment options while ensuring SRHR services are confidential, affordable, and stigma-free.

  • Strengthening Partnerships: Bringing together government agencies, community leaders, and civil society organizations to create coordinated and sustainable interventions.

  • Centering Community Voices: Upholding the principle of “nothing for us, without us” by ensuring Key Populations are actively involved in policy-making and program implementation.

Why Inclusive Health Systems Matter

Inclusive health systems are vital for reducing HIV prevalence, improving treatment outcomes, and protecting the rights of Key Populations. By fostering collaboration between NASCOP, community-based organizations like MAAYGO, and Key Population leaders, Kenya moves closer to achieving equitable healthcare for all.

MAAYGO’s Commitment

MAAYGO remains committed to building a healthier, just, and socially inclusive society. Through partnerships and continued advocacy, the organization will keep championing the rights of GSDM communities and supporting national efforts to achieve universal access to HIV and SRHR services.

Call to Action

Sustainable change requires collective action. Policymakers, healthcare providers, and community leaders must continue working together to ensure health systems reflect the needs of all Kenyans. By prioritizing inclusion, dignity, and justice, Kenya can achieve lasting progress in the fight against HIV and in advancing sexual and reproductive health rights.
